"When are you chatting with Haim?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

Yet the band will consistently be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
