The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.
